West Michigan parents work hard to keep their children safe. Mercy Health Partners and Safe Kids West Michigan are committed to providing parents with services to help.

Mercy Health is reaching out to area parents by serving as the lead organization for the West Michigan Safe Kids chapter. Serving Muskegon, Mason, Lake and Oceana counties, Safe Kids West Michigan has been working to preventing area children accidental deaths and injuries to area children since April of 2000.

Safe Kids is particularly focused on providing car seat inspections. It can be difficult to get car seats that fit children correctly and are correctly installed. While an average of 75% of parents misuse car seats nationwide, Safe Kids West Michigan observes 90-95% misuse in West Michigan. To help parents protect their children, Safe Kids offers car seat inspections twice month at local fire departments. Parents can call the Kids Safe West Michigan hotline (672-3968) to locate upcoming inspection sites. More information is also available on their Facebook page, where they post regular information on upcoming events (http://www.facebook.com/safekidswestmichigan).

Having a professional check over a child’s car seat for proper installation is a simple way to ensure that children are safe. Holly Alway, the Safe Kids Coordinator at Mercy Health Partners, finds four key areas of concern with car seat safety:

  • Determining how long children should be in a car seat or booster. Booster seats are required in MI for children under 4'9” and under the age of 8. Michigan recommends that parents keep their children in car seats until they can be seat belted appropriately. It is important to do seat belt fit test before moving from a booster.
  • Picking an appropriate car seat for the child’s height and weight is vital.
  • Adjusting the car seat harness properly
  • Installing the car seat properly.
Safe Kids West Michigan is active and committed to providing preventative measures and resources for area parents and children through a wide range of services aimed at preventing childhood accidents in our community, including:
  • Car seat inspections
  • Car seat distribution to low income residents
  • Bicycle helmets fittings and distribution
  • Pedestrian safety programs to help keep the walk to school safe
  • Water safety (rip currents, swimming and beach safety
  • Sports safety and concussion management prevention
  • Home and fire safety education
